It is a monster / Begotten upon itself, born on itself" Act 3, Scene 4.Īs Desdemona and Emilia exit the citadel, Cassio's mistress, Bianca, enters, seeking her lover. "But jealous souls will not be answered so / They are not ever jealous for the cause, / But jealous because they're jealous. Emilia tells Desdemona that her husband is insanely jealous. Desdemona tells Cassio that she is trying to win her husband's affections for him, but that he is enraged. Othello exits abruptly as Iago and Cassio enter. He says that there is ancient Egyptian magic in it, and that the loss of it tells strongly against their love. He requests the handkerchief and is aghast when she cannot give him the exact one for which he asks. Othello enters, immediately grilling his wife with questions concerning her loyalty. She frets to Emilia about the loss of her beloved handkerchief. The Clown runs her around in verbose circles. He was indeed very gullible and unaware of the thoughts of jealousy that will have taken over his mind in the next few days/scenes.Desdemona asks the Clown about the whereabouts of Cassio's lodgings. Even though he is 100% sure that he will not go jealous, all it took was a few lies and fake evidence from Iago that makes him go absolutely crazy. He believes that he still has Desdemona’s love and trust. This line simply illustrates to the reader how ignorant and overconfident Othello is towards his own reputation and character. “Think’st thou I’d make a life of jealousy?” What does this line tell us about Othello’s character? We can already see this through his many rants about how Desdemona doesn’t love him anymore. Other that getting that idea from what happened in Romeo and Juliette, I personally feel that Othello’s anger (due to jealousy) would be too much to take. Personally, I think that yes, due to all the stress that Othello might put on her in the future, she will suicide. Will Desdemona suicide because of all the stress Othello is going to put on her due to his anger? Readers can’t really help but to feel bad for him as he is being repeatedly manipulated by Iago. I bet that Othello will eventually go so far in his thoughts that no matter how much Desdemona tells him that she isn’t cheating, he isn’t going to believe her. This setting of betrayal and sadness is really disturbing how he deals with matters in real life, and is also making him go insane. However, he has been weakened down by many lies that Iago told him. Originally Othello was extremely confident about Desdemona’s love towards him. His mind is taken over by jealousy, and it is extremely funny because Othello is not the respectable and honorable person he was before, as I – and many other readers- have realized how weak and gullible he is inside. This imaginary setting I’m talking about is the imaginary world of cheating and betrayal that Othello is thinking and living in right now. Iago is then promoted to Othello’s lieutenant. Othello tests Iago and expects Cassio dead within 3 days. This makes Othello really mad and he declares revenge. One of them was that he witnessed Cassio wiping his face with Desdemona’s Handkerchief. Eventually Iago manages to enrage Othello convincing him of a bunch of lies regarding Desdemona and Cassio. Later on Othello and Iago are having a conversation. Iago begins to lay out his plan using the handkerchief. Picking it up, she keeps it for herself and eventually gives it to Iago. As Desdemona and Othello leaves, Emilia notices that Desdemona had left her handkerchief behind. Seeing that Othello is sweating, Desdemona wipes his sweat with her handkerchief. Desdemona and Emilia come in to his room to escort him to the dinner. Later in his room, Othello is still over thinking about his wife and Cassio, which makes him very nervous and disturbed. He sends Iago’s wife, Emilia, to watch Desdemona’s every actions. Being very sad, Othello wants to learn more about his wife. This makes Othello very crazy and insane. Iago succeeds and was able to fill Othello’s mind with a lot of bad sexual things that Desdemona might be doing with Cassio. Iago the presumes to talk with Othello about the current situation with Desdemona and Cassio. SummaryĪfter their heated conversation, Desdemona leaves Othello’s presence. This image shows a handkerchief, which is an item that plays a huge part in this play.
